Lest We Repeat
Anzac day.
Quite a day to reflect, given whats happening in Europe right now, on the benefits of mass violence. Or lack thereof…
I cant help but notice quite a few people taking the opportunity to use a national day of morning to raise their political agenda front and centre … by raising a Ukrainian flag.
Parading around “lest we forget”, while holding up a flag that screams out for itself “Ive forgotten everything!”
This maybe a little bit divisive or controversial right now but maybe if you support Liverpool, you are supporting football.
If you’re a 888 factory Holden Racing fan, youre a motor racing supporter.
Maybe if you support the All Blacks, you are defacto supporting Rugby.
And likewise, If you are currently supporting Ukraine, or urging your government to support Ukraine, maybe you are in support of WAR.
The only thing that I see coming from supporting Ukraine, is death. More of it. The more guns NATO send the Ukrainians, the more civilians the Ukrainian president will send to their slaughter.
Sure, they will probably succeed in killing more Russians before they die. Great. More death.
Encouraging politicians to “do something” about whats happening is simply daring them to start WW3, and I am NOT KEEN.
I have no idea what it must have been like to have been an ANZAC digger. Sent to the other side of the planet to shoot bullets at other -probably like-minded young men. But looking at the bigger context of WW2, it would have been easy to at least understand what you were fighting to stop.
But right now? Trying to stop a world Superpower from taking back a state, previously its own, after watching for decades as it turned more and more hostile towards Russia, right on Russias boarder…. ?
Not something I personally think is worth us, or the rest of the world getting involved in.
Sure it’s a shit show. And tragic. That part of the world has been -on and off- for a long time. But in my opinion, NATO has doubled down (in poker terms) on a bluff. A 7-3 off suit, waiting for a lucky turn....
Well Russia has called. And I think it time to fold. We don’t need to see the river card, nor do we want Russia going “All-In”
Right now it seems like there is still a choice.
-Go all-in - WW3, see what the river card has for us. Ensuring mass death and destruction. Aim for Pyrrhic Victory at best… (google this, it’s a good one)
Or, - Fold- don’t bring Ukraine into NATO, and leave it as a neutral country between Russia and Europe. Maybe they will have to give up some of the eastern states as a consequence of the bad bluff. The concession of arrogantly doubling down whist holding nothing.
But what will they do? Keep their chips to playout the next round? Live out the next decade or 2 or 3 in peace? Or play on till we all get screwed on the river, then throw the table on the floor and punch the opponent in the mouth? And see where the chips fall?
I don’t claim to know F-all about Ukraine, or its people. Or what the majority there realy think. Especially given the reputation of our media nowadays. But I can only assume like any human being, that most of them probably don’t give a shit if we call them Ukrainian, or Russian. They probably just want their family to live, and to be left in peace. Just a hunch, what would I know.

Lest we forget? Maybe we’ve already forgotten …
